If you’re travelling with kids (or even if you’re not), holidays here aren’t complete without a trip to Walt Disney World Resort. It’s still the most visited attraction in the world, and with Cinderella’s Castle, magical parades and exciting rides, it’s easy to see why. Universal Orlando Resort™ has something for all ages, too, with all kinds of movie-themed fun to be had. Want a break from the busy theme parks? Head for a super-sized shopping centre for a spot of shopping and a bite to eat.

Walt Disney World Resort is full of magic for little kids and grown-ups alike; you’re never too old to say hi to Mickey Mouse! The original theme park is Magic Kingdom®, and this is where you’ll find the iconic Cinderella Castle at the heart of six enchanted lands. Over at Epcot, you can travel the world as you visit 11 international pavilions filled with activities. Disney’s Hollywood Studios® are a celebration of the Golden Age of cinema, complete with movie-themed rides and backstage tours. Experience life on the Serengeti plains at Animal Kingdom®, which is home to over 1,700 exotic animals.

Planning on doing some shopping during your holiday? There’s enough to keep you busy for weeks, so load up your Thomas Cook Cash Passport with dollars for the best rate, and get spending! One of the finest shopping destinations is the elegant Mall at Millennia, where you’ll find high street shops and chic department stores galore. It’s just a ten-minute drive from Universal Orlando Resort™, so you can squeeze in a trip on the way back to your hotel. Over at i-Drive, there’s the popular Orlando Premium Outlets®; it’s the place to go if you want designer labels at bargain prices. Find souvenirs galore at Downtown Disney®, and limited-edition goodies at The Art of Disney.

This is one for film fans. Universal Orlando Resort™ is home to three mind-blowing theme parks based on the studio’s hit films. At Universal Studios Florida, you’ll discover The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, meet the Minions, and join forces with the Transformers. Next door is Universal’s Islands of Adventure, where you’ll battle alongside Spider-Man, explore with The Incredible Hulk, and run for your life at Jurassic Park. And then (last, but not least) there’s the newest addition: Universal’s Volcano Bay™. Expect an array of winding waterslides, lazy rivers and fun pools to keep all ages entertained. Plus, there are five amazing hotels on site if you want to stay in the heart of the action.

Orlando is best for

Families: Watch your kids’ faces light up as they meet their favourite Disney characters at Walt Disney World Resort. They’ll remember it forever, making your holiday a truly magical experience for everyone.

Movie buffs: This is your chance to be a part of your favourite films and TV shows at Universal Orlando™.

Shoppers: Pick up a designer bargain at Orlando Premium Outlets®, or grab a souvenir at Downtown Disney®.

Weather and climate

Temperature: Average temperatures are in the early 30s (°C).
Best time to visit: For famous Florida sunshine without the intense heat, book your holiday for spring or autumn.

During the summer, it’s usually hot and humid, so at this time of year, it’s a good idea to stay away from the theme parks in the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest. Winters are mild, but you should bring a light jacket to keep you warm in the evenings. Don’t forget that hurricane season runs from June to November, but the chances of getting caught in a storm are low. It’s an all-year-round destination too, so holidays here in the winter are ideal if you want a Christmas treat for the kids they’ll remember forever.

Getting Around

By hire car: This is the simplest way to get around. Remember that you’ll come across lots of toll roads during your holiday, so make sure you have a roll of quarters for the toll booths. Bagging a parking spot outside major hotspots can be tricky (especially during peak season).

By trolley bus: If you’re staying near i-Drive, make the most of the i-Drive trolley bus service; it’s a convenient and reliable way to travel around the area.

By bus: Walt Disney World Resort runs buses between their hotels and theme parks. Other hotels offer a similar service, so it’s worth asking.

Events

Halloween: It’s a big holiday over in the US, and you’re in for a treat. Halloween Horror Nights™ at Universal Orlando Resort will give you a fright. You’ll find some more kid-friendly festivities over at Walt Disney World Resort; dress up as your favourite Disney character, munch on sticky toffee apples and watch the fireworks light up the sky.

Christmas: Disney’s Magic Kingdom® turns into a winter wonderland. Crisp white snowflakes fall on the park, and you’ll see Santa join Mickey Mouse in the parade.
