Travellers are spoilt for choice when it comes to visiting ancient monuments in and around Antalya. Most are within an hour's drive and the city itself is home to the old district of Kaleici, which is lined with Ottoman houses and remnants of Roman architecture. In Side, Aspendos is one of the best preserved Roman theaters you’ll find. Go a bit further away to Perge and you’ll find a huge archaeological site with ancient columns, baths and stained glass windows.

This stretch of coastline is referred to as the Turquoise Coast thanks to its beautiful blue waters. Backed by pine forests and mountains, the region has its own beautiful bays, coves and lively resorts including Side, Kemer and Alanya, all of which offer a variety of water sports including jet skiing, parasailing, diving and banana boat rides.

The Taurus mountains offer plenty of activities for sporty types including guided treks, rock climbing, jeep safaris and even skiing between January and April. If you love diving, head to the underwater centres at Kemer, Side and Alanya for regular offshore excursions. The Koprulu Canyon National Park is a popular day trip for nature lovers and white water rafters.

Antalya is best for

History buffs: Visit Antalya to check out its ancient ruins. It’s home to an archaeological museum with a collection of treasures from the Mediterranean coast. The city's old walled quarter contains an impressive Roman gate, an Ottoman era clock tower and a 13 th century minaret. 

Beach lovers: The city has two large beaches and is close to top resorts including Alanya, Kemer and Side which feature calm, shallow waters, seafront restaurants, lively bars and bustling marinas.

Families: The Antalya Museum has a children's section with lots of activities on offer. Family-friendly boat trips run regularly from the harbour. The Water Planet Aqua Park in nearby Alanya has slides, a lazy river and pools and is great for kids of all ages (and big kids!).

Weather and climate

Temperature: Late 20s in July and August. 

Best time to visit Antalya: Expect up to 12 hours of sunshine each day throughout spring and summer. Even in the winter, the average is 10 hours a day. You won’t get much rainfall between May and September and the average sea temperature is in the mid to late 20s between June and October.

Getting Around

By Train: You won’t find a lot of trains in Turkey, although it’s a cheap way to explore. There's no train station in Antalya. The nearest station is a two-hour drive away in the city of Burdur. 

By Taxi: It’s easy to pick up a cheap taxi in the main resorts. Look out also for the local dolmuş minibuses which provide an even cheaper way to travel.

By Boat: Catch one of the regular boat trips to coastal towns and islands in the Gulf of Antalya from the harbour.

By Hire Car: Hire cars can be booked in advance or when you arrive.

By Bus: Turkey’s bus network is excellent and very cheap, but buy your ticket from a reputable outlet and beware of ticket scammers!


For film fans: The Antalya Film Festival celebrates European and Asian cinema and is held every October at the Antalya Cultural Centre. The event first launched in 1963 and has attracted stars including Helen Mirren and Francis Ford Coppola over the years. 

For alfresco art: Check out Sandland, the city's international sand sculpture festival that runs from May to December on Lara beach. Sculptors from across the world head here to create outstanding works of art from tons of sand.

For family fun: The annual International Children's Festival in April welcomes kids from of all nationalities to join in with street games, folk dancing and outdoor concerts throughout Antalya.
