Since the 60s, people have been flocking to Lanzarote for its fantastic beach holidays, great weather and cheap deals. The resorts have plenty of options for you to choose from including All Inclusive, and because of huge investments in tourism, Lanzarote caters well for holidaymakers.

Lanzarote is packed with wildlife, jet-black volcanic rock and beautiful beaches. Whether you’re into exploring the natural surroundings or you prefer water sports and shopping, you’ll find it on a holiday to Lanzarote.

If you can’t sit still on holiday and are always looking for an adrenaline rush, then Lanzarote should really appeal. The range of excursions and activities is endless, from scuba diving and windsurfing in Costa Teguise to hiking up the huge volcanic craters in Timanfaya National Park. The north of the island is a great stop off if you’re a bit sporty, with the surfing beaches of La Famara promising brilliant waves.

Lanzarote’s brightly coloured hibiscus plants, leafy trees and cacti add to the tropical feel of the whole island. The Jardin de Cactus in Guatiza in the north showcases over 10,000 different types of cactus, making it a great stop off if you’re a nature lover. In the grotto-like caves of Jameos del Agua, you can view the incredibly rare white blind crabs, which would normally live 2000 metres under the sea.

It’s not surprising that Lanzarote has such an artistic history with its amazing landscape and colourful culture. The César Manrique Foundation features carefully curated pieces, which is great for art lovers to check out whilst on a visit. There are also many markets in the villages surrounding the resorts, selling the usual tourist souvenirs and trinkets alongside traditional Canarian arts and crafts.

Lanzarote is best for

Water sports fans: Lanzarote is known for its great variety of water sports thanks to its crystal clear waters and many beaches. From scuba diving and windsurfing to sea fishing and glass bottoms boats, there are countless activities to enjoy on the water.

Adventurers: The volcanic eruptions that created the Canary Islands also created the fascinating landscapes of Timanfaya National Park. There are various parts of the island with water and ash where you can see just how hot the volcanic rock remains, even though it’s been dormant for centuries.

Culture vultures: César Manrique, a modernist artist and close friend of Pablo Picasso, was vital to the cultural and tourist development of the island. His sculptures, monuments and pieces of architecture can be seen across Lanzarote. For art lovers, the César Manrique Foundation in Tahiche is a real must-see museum.

Fast facts

Language: The main language is a Canarian dialect of Spanish but a variety of languages are spoken on the resorts including French and German.

Currency: Euros are the currency in Lanzarote making it very easy to access extra cash if needed.

Local time: Lanzarote runs on GMT time, the same as the UK, so you won’t need to change your watches at all.

Fly to: Arrecife airport is around half an hour from each of the main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca.

Flight time from the UK: Approximately 4 hours 20 mins from the UK.

Tourist information: Each of the main resorts has several tourist information points but you can click here for more details.

Weather and climate

Temperature: With highs of 25°C in August and September, Lanzarote has year-round sunshine and warm temperatures. The island remains mild in winter with temperatures of approximately 18-20°C, cooling off to around 15°C overnight.

Climate: Lanzarote’s close proximity to the Sahara Desert, a mere 127km away, brings some pretty high temperatures in the summer months of May to October. A north-easterly wind keeps these temperatures from being too scorching, making it ideal weather for sunbathing but also perfect for adventures. With barely any rainfall over summer, Lanzarote is a real treat from the UK’s constant summer showers.

Getting Around

By taxi: A reliable taxi service is available on all resorts and directly from the airport.

By bus: Cheap, trusted and ideal for sightseeing, Lanzarote has a dependable bus network from all the resorts.

Hire Cars: There are lots of reputable car hire companies on the island, all serving the main resorts. You can even book car hire before your holiday.

Coach trips: Great for day excursions, there are lots of coach trips to the various attractions on the island.

Events

For fans of carnival: Visit around spring time and you’ll probably be lucky to catch one of the many traditional carnivals marking the start of Easter. The locals are known for really throwing themselves into the spirit with themed floats and dancing along the streets.

For a cultural treat: Jameos del Agua near Punta Mujeres is an all-rounder. Caves formed by volcanic eruptions have created this museum, art gallery, swimming pool, music hall and restaurant space. The big caves of the Cueva de los Verdes hold great music nights.

For sporty types: Lanzarote holds many sporting events including an annual Iron Man championship as well as various biking and water sports competitions.
