There's plenty to keep both sun seekers and active types occupied in Puerto Rico. Kick back on one of the stunning golden sand beaches and refuel at one of the many restaurants that line the promenade. There are water sports galore including windsurfing, jet skiing and diving. Whether you've splashed out on an All Inclusive break or you've found a cheap winter sun deal, Puerto Rico offers something for every kind of traveller.

Puerto Rico is home to two beaches: Amadores, a horseshoe shaped stretch of sand popular with families for its calm, shallow waters and Blue Flag rating, and the town's crescent shaped beach in the centre of town. Here you'll find the pick of Puerto Rico's restaurants, bars and cafes along the beachfront promenade. Consider a day trip to Maspalomas, a 20 minute drive east, where you'll find stunning sand dunes, a nature reserve and golden sands that are split into sections for families, nudists and gay travellers.

The sun shines year round in Puerto Rico and the sea temperature remains pleasant throughout the winter. Active types can try their hand at a spot of windsurfing, jet skiing or diving. Boat trips, including booze cruises and glass bottom dolphin spotting excursions, depart regularly from the harbour.

Head to the nearby Lago Oasis Waterpark to splash around in the saltwater pool and brave the waterslides. For younger kids, try the Angry Birds Activity Park which has playgrounds, a pedal karting track and a ball pool. Sioux City Park is a theme park set in a former film set used for Westerns and is fun for all the family with its pony rides, Wild West re-enactments and saloon bar.

Puerto Rico is best for

Water sports fans: Take your pick from jet skiing, windsurfing, sailing or diving. Boat trips, including dolphin spotting excursions, depart regularly from the harbours.

Fun loving families: There are plenty of activities to keep kids entertained in Puerto Rico including the Lago Taurito waterpark and the Angry Birds Activity Park with its crazy golf courses and go karting track.
