Since the 1960s the southern resorts in Portugal have been popular amongst sun seeking Europeans and huge investment into the tourist industry means there are plenty of great places to stay for your beach holiday. With natural beauty and year-round sunshine, the resorts of the Algarve and the island of Madeira are wonderful destinations for your hard earned rest.

Family holidays are made when the kids are at their happiest. Taking a day out on your holiday schedule to one of the region’s amazing theme parks is a guaranteed way of wearing out those little people. A day out to Zoomarine in Albufeira, a combined aquarium/theme park/water park, is an ideal day trip even you if don’t have kids. Zoomarine even gives you the chance to swim with dolphins in its state of the art dolphinarium - something to tick off the bucket list!

If you’re a bit of history buff then you’ll love Portugal. The south coast has many medieval towns with some great examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture as well as some ancient Roman ruins and museums.

The different environments of Portugal mean there are lots of beautiful walks, hikes and treks along coastlines, beaches, villages, cities and cliff tops. Take a boat out to sea for some dolphin spotting and to check out the caves of the coastlines.

Portugal is best for

Walking and hiking: The southern coast of Portugal and the island of Madeira have some fantastic hikes and walks around their beautiful landscapes. From high octane hikes up Madeira’s ‘Valley of the Nuns’ to more gentle treks around villages scattering the resorts, there’s something for both the experienced rambler and the novice.

Hit the beach: For those of us who need to relax and rewind on our holidays, Portugal is perfect. Spend the day lazing on the warm, soft sand while the kids build sandcastles, or a balmy evening sat in a bar watching the crowds go by.

Touch of adventure: Sitting against the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is blessed with a huge coastline which is ideal for many different types of water sports. Ever wanted to take up surfing? Or an adrenaline-pumping parasailing trip? Dive in!

Fast facts

Language: Portuguese is the official language of Portugal.

Currency: Euro is the currency of Portugal, making it super easy to access cash.

Local time: Portugal clocks are set to GMT/UK time

Fly to: Faro airport is nearest to the Algarve. Madeira airport serves many major international airports in Europe.

Flight time from UK: Approximately 2.5 hours to Faro and around 4 hours to Madeira from the UK.

Tourist information: See the official website here for lots of details.

Visa and health: There are no visas required for UK travellers and no vaccinations needed.

Weather and climate

Temperature: The weather can be different all over the country. In the south and in Madeira, the summer months are warm and dry with an average of 24°C and lovely sea temperatures.

Best time to visit: For Madeira, the summer months between June and September are really beautiful with high temperatures of the mid 20s, but with a breeze that keeps things nice and cool. Summer in the Algarve has at least 12 hours of sunshine a day and highs of around 28°C. Even the winters are lovely in both regions with temperatures never falling below 10°C, unlike the UK!

Getting Around

Portugal is a large country and has many options for travelling including its national railway which is reliable and modern.

Bus: Cheap and cheerful, local buses are a great way to see the sights.

Taxis: Like all holiday resorts, there are many taxi services in the Algarve and Madeira.

Car Hire: A great way to get to tourist stops and around the towns at your own pace, there are plenty of car rental businesses in the resorts and can be organised prior to travelling.

Train: The Portuguese Rail Network serves the whole country and provides connecting travel between Faro and Tavira.

Portugal Day: On the 10th June every year, the Portuguese celebrate their national pride with Portugal Day, a day to mark their heritage and culture. Catch a military march, a street party, one of the many firework displays or simply just enjoy it the Portuguese way with food and music and dancing.

Madeira Flower Festival: Madeira is famous for its many flower beds, which bloom thanks to the fertile ground and short and sharp heavy rainfall over the winter. This famous festival takes place over five days in April and is a beautiful event for those who love all things botanical. The finale, a festival parade with flower-decked floats and street dancing, is well worth checking out.

Music Festivals: Throughout the country, Portugal plays host to a vast variety of music festivals. In Lisbon, the Rock in Rio festival takes place every few years with great line ups. If indie music is more your thing the NOS Alive festival over the summer months in Lisbon is guaranteed to win over getting wet and muddy in a field in the UK.
