With its long and fascinating history (the island was the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World in ancient times), you can explore the museums and castle of the Old Town before taking a break in one of the many tavernas and cafés.

Rhodes is surrounded by the sea so there are lots of opportunities for fun in the water. Usually, that means swimming or paddling, but Rhodes is also a great place for diving too.

The island has several dive schools and once you've had enough professional instruction, you can go out with an experienced diver to explore the sea.

The original temple dates back thousands of years to the 9th century BC, but it was rebuilt after it burned down in 342 BC. The Acropolis sits on the hill above the pretty whitewashed town of Lindos and is easily accessible with a 10 minute walk from the village.

If walking isn’t your thing then you can also take a donkey ride to the top and explore the remains of the Temple of Athena. You'll also find ancient burial sites and churches before heading back down the hill for a well earned cool drink in a taverna.

Rhodes is a paradise for water sports and there are plenty of activities to choose from, depending on how energetic you want to be.

For the really adventurous, parasailing is an exciting experience where you’ll get a whole new perspective of the island from the air. Learn how to water ski or hire a jet ski and skim along the shore at speed with the wind in your hair. Or why not try a fun banana boat ride or just relax with a family day trip on a boat tour? There’s plenty to do out on the water in this beautiful part of Greece.

Rhodes is best for

Family fun: Hotels at the beach resorts have everything you could want for keeping the family busy. From kids' clubs to poolside activities, swimming in the sea and trying out water sports, followed by all sorts of entertainment in the evening, they have something for everyone.

Intrepid explorers: There are many parts of the island that are unspoiled and perfect if you enjoy hiking or cycling. You'll find hidden gems that are off the beaten track and discover small beaches that you can't reach by car. Take a day out to explore to get a real taste of the island's natural beauty.
