It may be a small island but Kos has lots of places to see and things to do. Of course it's known for its holiday lifestyle but you’ll also find many quaint villages and a chance to explore the ancient history of the place. There's plenty of shopping to be done as well as having adventures on the water or just lounging around on the beach. What better place to spend some holiday time than this magical island gem?

When you've had your fill of delicious food in a little taverna, a quality restaurant or the buffet at your hotel, take some time to seek out some of the special products you can only get in Kos. Kanellada is a non-alcoholic traditional liqueur that's made of cinnamon, and you could also try soumada from neighbouring Nisros, made from almonds and also non alcoholic.

Seek out a sweet preserve that's made from baby tomatoes and try some "cheese of posa". It's a special type of goat's cheese that's stored in red wine. The local honey is made with wild thyme and other flowers grown on Kos, making it a tasty souvenir to take home for friends and family.

In Kos, like much of Greece, you might stumble across a festival at some point during your holiday. The major one is the Hippocrates Festival during July and August, where you'll find all manner of entertainment in Kos Town. You'll discover ancient Greek dramas, plays and concerts, energetic folk dancing and exhibitions of local arts and crafts.

You can also watch sailing contests, see the local religious festivals, known as panegyris, and try the fantastic Fish Festival in Kefalos in August.

The legendary Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, trained and taught in Kos. You can see the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, said to be standing on the place where the great healer taught. The town also has a castle that the Knights of St John built, and the temple of Dionysos, the god of wine, winemaking and the grape harvest.

In Kefalos you can visit Agios Stefanos, an early Christian basilica, and the little village of Antimachia is home to a medieval castle. There are many other monuments dotted around the island as well as plenty of other ruins and historical sites to check out. Whether you choose to relax, explore or enjoy the pulsating nightlife you certainly won't be disappointed with what Kos has to offer you.
