Whether you're looking to have a budget holiday in a Self Catering apartment or you want to have an All Inclusive break at a top hotel, there are plenty of options to choose from with our range of holidays to Greece.

It doesn't matter whether you just want to relax on the beach or by the pool, have some adventures on (or below) the water or take some time to explore the sights of Greece. There's something for everyone here, whether you’re looking for a fun packed holiday or just the chance to unwind. The Greeks are friendly and very hospitable, and will happily point you in the direction of what you want to do.

With our great selection of beach holidays in Greece you'll always be close to the water, so why not make the most of it? It doesn't matter if you're experienced or not, you can try out water sports in a safe environment at one of the many tourist resorts. Snorkelling is great for kids to see some underwater wildlife, and taking a ride on a banana boat is a great way for teens and adults to have fun out on the waves. Families will enjoy going out for a day of deep sea fishing with the excitement of landing something special from the depths of the ocean. For real adventure, try parasailing or learning how to dive around the coasts of Kos or Corfu.

Greece is full of ancient sites and you can discover little monasteries and churches on the islands as well as remains dating back thousands of years. The Acropolis in Athens, the temple at Delphi and the amazing Knossos in Crete are fascinating glimpses into Greece's ancient culture.

Greece is a haven for those with a sweet tooth and its well worth taking the time to seek out the delicious sweets they produce. As well as tempting sugary snacks you can buy from shops and street vendors, don't forget to order those to-die- for desserts such as baklava and kataifi.

Greece is best for

Families: The clear, warm waters of the Mediterranean gently lap the shores of the islands of Zante, Corfu, Crete and Kos, and are safe for swimming and paddling.

Lovers of history: Archaeological evidence of Greece's civilization goes back thousands of years. Knossos, the centre of the Minoan culture on Crete, is a spectacular site and the origin of the legendary Minotaur.

Water adventurers: With the sea all around there are plenty of water sports to enjoy. Whether it's snorkelling, banana boats, jet skiing, water skiing, windsurfing or parasailing you’ll find choices for everyone.

Fast facts

Language: The official language is Greek and the letters of the alphabet are very different to ours. Most people working in the tourist industry speak English fluently.

Currency: Euro.

Local Time: Two hours ahead of GMT/UK time.

Fly to: Athens International Airport or the international airports on Kos, Crete, Rhodes, Zante (Zakynthos) and Corfu.

Flight Time from the UK: Flights to all Greek destinations are around 4 hours from London Heathrow.

Visa and Health: Before travelling to Greece with Airtours make sure you’ve got the right health and travel insurance in place.

Weather and climate

Temperature: It can get very hot in July and August, into the mid 30s or sometimes above, though it's generally cooler on the islands than in Athens, thanks to sea breezes.

Best time to visit Greece: If the heat is what you want then the summer is the perfect time to go. A beach holiday with plenty of time in the shade around a pool is exactly what the Greek islands offer. You’ll find cooler temperatures in May and September, a more relaxing mid 20s is normal, but Athens can be really hot and uncomfortable in high summer so try spring or autumn for a visit.

Getting around

By train: There aren't any trains on the islands but if you're on the mainland you can get a few intercity trains and there is a suburban network from Athens.

By Taxi: You can find taxis everywhere in the main resorts and they can be quite cheap.

By boat: Ferries to and between islands operate regularly, or try a water taxi to explore the hidden parts of your island.

By Hire Car: Available mainly at airports when you arrive or booked in advance.

By bus: There are regular bus services on the islands and relatively inexpensive.

For art lovers: Athens Epidaurus Greek Festival happens every summer during June and August. It includes a great range of performances such as modern theatre, opera, ballet, jazz, ancient drama, art exhibitions and classical music concerts. These events take place in a number of theatres around Athens.

Soak up the culture: The Hippocrates Festival runs from July until August in Kos Town. As well as a range of concerts, plays, exhibitions and folk dancing, not to mention ancient Greek dramas, there are also sailing contests to enjoy and to get a flavour of how the islanders have always been seafarers.
