Christopher Columbus fell in love with the coastlines of Holguin hundreds of years ago and it’s easy to see why with our range of beach holidays in Holguin. The bays and beaches, forests and hills have made this region an impressive destination. Holguin really does have something for everyone, whether it’s swimming the coral reefs, horseback riding over rolling hills or simply relaxing on the beach with a cocktail.

The sport fishing around Cuba’s shorelines is world class thanks to the mixing of oceans and the Gulf Stream. Organise a trip through your hotel or online in advance, and head out on the water in a small speedboat or huge professional sport fishing boat. You can also take a tour to the serene fishing town of Gibara and see what life is like in a real fishing community.

Holguin province has a long coastline with miles of white sand beaches including the Playa Pesquero area with a 1 kilometre long, straight beach. Sheltered by a coral reef, these shores are always gentle and inviting if you’re after the best beach holidays in Holguin. If you don’t want to sunbathe all the time, there are water sports, spas, pools and restaurants too.

Climbing the 450 steps of the Loma de la Cruz (hill of the cross) is a must for anybody staying in the city of Holguin. The hike is long but it’s worth the effort as the views are fantastic. Founded in 1545, Holguin is Cuba’s 4th largest city and its brilliant architecture makes it a great day trip for sightseers. There are also many city tours, from cigar factories to park exploration, to get a deeper understanding of this historic city.

Holguin is best for

Beach lovers: Enjoy the sun warming your skin at one of Holguin’s beachside resorts. Warm water and beautiful sandy beaches combine to bring you the perfect holiday.

Wilderness explorers: Several national parks are within a short distance of Holguin including the Alexander von Humboldt National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is amazing with its huge variety of plant life and the beautiful landscape.

Families: Because the Holguin region has so many activities to offer, it’s a great place to take the whole family. The city is classic Cuba and can be viewed from a height after climbing 450 steps to Loma de la Cruz, while the town of Playa Pesquero offers water sports and diving. Everything from museums to nature trails can be found all within this one province.

Fast facts

Currency: Although the government has announced that one of the Cuban currencies is to be discontinued, so far the country still has two. The CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso) is for tourists and is equal to 1 US dollar and the CUP (Cuban Peso) is for locals and is worth much less. As a tourist you can use both, CUPs are better for local buses, taxis and non tourist restaurants.

Language: Spanish.

Population: 11+ million.

Flight time: 10 hours from London direct to Havana and around 14 hours from London to Holguin including a connecting flight.

Time Zone: Cuba is five hours behind the UK (GMT) in winter and 4 behind in summer as it uses Daylight Savings Time.

Weather and climate

Temperature: Cuba has a year round temperature between 15°C and 30°C. The sea temperature is lovely and warm all year, between 24°C and 28°C.

Best time to visit: December to April are the driest months and the evenings can get chilly. The summer months are warmer, wetter and more humid but rain showers tend to be short and sweet. Cuba can be affected by hurricanes between June and October although these are uncommon and shouldn’t stop you from visiting during the summer months.

Getting Around

By taxi: Taxis are very easy to find, from government run Panataxis to old American private taxis. Some will have meters and some won’t, so always agree on a price beforehand if there’s no meter.

By hire car: Hiring cars can be expensive in Cuba and the roads outside of the cities aren’t always maintained very well. Hire cars can be organised through airports and resorts.

By bus: The Viazul Bus company operates clean and modern buses between cities and these are a great way to visit places further away. Local buses are cheaper and a little rough around the edges, but still a very enjoyable way to see the area.

By boat: Tiny tropical cays and excellent snorkelling spots are easy to reach with organised boat trips.

Events

For festivalgoers: For anyone visiting Holguin in August, the Holguin Carnival absolutely cannot be missed. In true Cuban spirit there’s dancing, music, parades and great Cuban food.

For artists and musicians: Romerias de Mayo is a weeklong pilgrimage and festival that celebrates all things creative. This annual celebration in Holguin begins with a procession up to the highest point in Holguin city before going back down to the streets for music, youth art projects and more.

For culture lovers: Just a 2.5 hour drive south from Holguin is the energetic city of Santiago de Cuba. It gets even livelier in July with the Fiesta del Fuego, the Festival of Fire.
