Carribean holidays

Sitting between North and South America, the Caribbean is a sea lined with thousands of islands, large and small. A mixture of African, Native and European heritage, each country is unlike any other. Caribbean holidays have lots of opportunities for fun and relaxation, including whale and dolphin watching, sunbathing, jungle trekking and SCUBA diving.

35 °C

Much of the Caribbean is sat in the Atlantic trade wind belt and so, while the temperatures are always between 15°C and 35°C, it never gets too hot.

8 to 11 hours

Almost all the major islands are separate countries and have their own international airports. Countries such as Antigua, Jamaica, St Lucia and Barbados are all easily to reach from the UK and their airports are close to popular towns and resorts.

Book a cheap holiday to the Caribbean with Airtours and discover a place like no other with endless tropical beaches, colourful and vibrant communities and some of the best snorkelling in the world.

Picking a destination in the Caribbean is tough because there are so many places to choose from. You can see where The Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed in St Vincent and the Grenadines, check out the rum distilleries in Martinique, enjoy food and music in Jamaica and relax on beaches everywhere.

Enjoy conch stuffed rotis in the Windward Islands, a chicken buccaneer in the French islands and fresh fish BBQs and lobster everywhere. The food is always cheap and delicious in these islands but don’t forget the drinks. Most Caribbean islands have one or more rum distilleries offering tours, tastings and purchases for amazing prices.

Beach holidays in the Caribbean are everything you’d expect, right down to the coconut studded palm trees. The West Indies is great for learning to kiteboard and windsurf as well as snorkel, dive or simply relax on a beach.  With so many to choose from, you can sunbathe on the edge of lively beach bars or chill out with no one else in sight.

These islands were the sites of wars which lasted hundreds of years. Some islands changed hands between the English, French and Spanish many times and the Dutch and Danish owned many too. As a result, you’ll see many forts and cannons on the islands, none more obvious than Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua. Leaving military history behind, sugar and coffee plantations are common and rum distilleries are everywhere. Tours are always available and the guides connect deeply with their stories.

The Caribbean is best for

Divers: The Caribbean is an amazing place to dive and snorkel. The water is between 22°C and 28°C and the Caribbean and has two of the world’s biggest barrier reefs. With colourful fish, lobster, friendly sharks and a large turtle population, each dive and snorkel trip is guaranteed to leave you buzzing. Dive holidays here will amaze even experienced divers.

Food and drink lovers: Thanks to the range of cultures in the Caribbean, the cuisine is a varied mix. Enjoy West Indian chicken and conch and wash it down with the local rum or fruit juices.

Sunbathers: The Caribbean is definitely known for its beaches. One of the best places in the world for beach holidays, each island has beautiful tropical seashores, perfect for relaxing on.

Fast Facts

Language: The main languages of the Caribbean are English, French, Spanish and Creole English. Whatever the language, the friendly locals will always help you out.

Currency: Most of the West Indies uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar except the French islands who use Euros. Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti have their own currencies and the Bahamas uses Bahamian Dollars and US Dollars, which are always worth the same. Cash is useful everywhere as ATMs aren’t as widespread as back home.

Flight time: If you fly direct, flights from London take between 8 and 11 hours to Caribbean destinations. Smaller Caribbean Islands may require connecting flights and take longer. London to Antigua is 8 hours 40 minutes while London to Jamaica is 10 hours.

Number of countries: There are 28 countries in the Caribbean.

Weather and Climate

Temperature: Thanks to its location, the Caribbean experiences temperatures between 15°C and 35°C all year round.

Best time to visit: The Caribbean has year round high temperatures without getting uncomfortably hot, thanks to the winds. Mountainous areas such as St Lucia, Guadeloupe and Cuba can experience more rain but are quick to dry out. Hurricane season lasts from June to November and can affect any Caribbean country. However, countries such as Trinidad, Barbados and Grenada are usually too far south for hurricanes.

Getting Around

By taxi: For every island big enough to have roads, taxis are frequent and friendly. Agree on a price beforehand. Taxis can range from cars and people carriers to scooters and golf carts.

By hire car: You can hire a car with ease in most Caribbean countries. Scooters, buggies, golf carts and quad bikes can often be hired too.

By bus: Buses in the Caribbean range from minivans pumping out music to typical town buses. All are friendly and drivers and passengers will help you find the correct change and destination.

By plane: Many islands use ‘puddle jumpers’, small, light aircraft that can transport people between Caribbean Islands and countries. One example is the popular plane between Montserrat and Antigua. These can be very cheap and a great way to see nearby islands.

By ferry: Ferries are common between islands and countries, especially in the West Indies. Usually cheap, ferries are how you might get from a major island to a nearby smaller one.

Events

For sportsmen: Antigua Sailing Week is one of the world’s most well known sailing regattas and brings thousands to this small country every year. Check out our holiday deals for this event and enjoy a picnic on the hill above Falmouth Harbour where you can watch the racing below.

For festivalgoers: A huge festival over the Christmas period each year, Junkanoo is celebrated in many Caribbean countries, especially Jamaica. This fun carnival features fancy dress, dancing, music and parades.

For jazz lovers: The Barbados Jazz Festival is a weeklong January celebration of this wonderful style of music. Dance, eat and be merry with a range of talented bands in this beautiful country.
