When you book a holiday to Florida with Airtours, we’ll include a hire car for you to make it easier for you and your family to get out and about.
Having your own car opens up loads of opportunities for adventure, like driving the great American highways with the wind in your hair and shopping for bargains in the out-of-town outlet malls. With your own car, you’ll be able to discover even more of the amazing sunshine state.
We only include basic third party insurance cover with your hire car, so we strongly recommend that you take out full insurance to cover any potential damage that may happen to the car.
Give us a call on 01733 224 901 before you go, and we’ll be able to help you out with upgrading your insurance.
Having a car means you can do what you want, when you want. In America, even if you’re not planning on venturing too far from the main resort, a car is still useful for the odd occasion where you fancy doing something a bit different. Driving around Orlando is pretty simple as the roads are nice and straight and attractions are signposted really well.
Here are a few extra tips to help you when you’re driving:
Don’t forget, you need to drive on the right!
Carry your driving licence with you whenever you’re driving in case you get stopped.
You won’t find any roundabouts (hooray) but there are plenty of traffic lights at junctions. Unless there are signs to say you can’t, you’re allowed to turn right at a red light (after you’ve stopped to make sure there’s nothing coming from your left). If the red light is flashing, you can still turn right, but with caution.
You can overtake, or be overtaken on the inside AND the outside, so make sure you check your mirrors constantly! Never overtake a yellow school bus if it’s stopped and its red lights are flashing.
The speed limit is generally lower than the UK (between 20-40 mph in cities and usually between 55-70 mph on rural highways). These limits are strictly monitored by the local police, so beware!
Seat belts are compulsory in the front seats. Children up to the age of 6 must be strapped into an approved car seat.
There is zero tolerance to drink driving so you should avoid it all costs. If you need to carry alcohol, make sure it is in the boot of the car.
Some of the major attractions have large car parks. Remember to write down the exact location of your car, to save you wandering for hours trying to find it at the end of a fun day. Most rental cars look alike after a long day of sightseeing!
The driving times you’ll see are based on the average times it takes to get between the two locations. Give yourself extra time if you’re going during busy peak periods.
Although your hire car agreement includes Third Party Liability coverage to the state minimum (which can be as low as $20,000 in Florida), it is vital you have adequate cover to protect yourself against severe financial risk in the event of total loss of the vehicle, damage or accidents with a third party, especially as some US drivers carry little or no insurance.
It is compulsary that you upgrade your car rental coverage. Your upgrade options are twofold: pre-book one of our two inclusive package options (Fully Inclusive or Gold) or purchase cover in resort direct from Alamo.
Pre-booking your insurance also allows you to budget well in advance, and gives you valuable peace of mind knowing that you won’t be met with numerous extra charges when you arrive. In addition it will also save you time in resort.
Take a look at this example to see what’s not included in our pre-booked package based on a 4-door Economy car for 14 nights:
State Environment Surcharge ($2.05 per day) $28.70
