No holiday is complete without getting lost in a good book or two. It’s an important part of the overall experience; diving into a thriller by the pool, a cheeky romance novel while lazing on the balcony or solving a murder mystery from the sand.

Because we know how much you love to read, we’ve put together our rundown of five of this summer’s hottest novels, that’ll be right at home in your beach bag when you jet away. Their respective authors have let us know exactly what their dream holiday looks like too; so see if you can take some inspiration!

1 – Adam Croft: Only The Truth

What would be your perfect holiday?

“A fortnight (if not more) on a Greek island. A large swimming pool, plenty of beer and even more books.”

2 – Helen Callaghan: Dear Amy

What would be your perfect holiday?

“I have never been able to get to grips with the conventional beach holiday; I am too pale and burn if someone lights a candle in the room! But I do love exploring ancient ruins and museums somewhere balmy and Mediterranean, such as Italy, then capping off the evening with an al fresco dinner and a walk along the beach. Perhaps, if the circumstances are right, I’ll even enjoy a late night swim in the warm sea.”

3 – Robin Stevens: Murder Most Unladylike

What would be your perfect holiday?

“My perfect holiday would contain a pool, a stack of books as tall as I am and food that would appear magically beside me whenever I wanted it… And after about two days of that, a beautiful city to explore, mountains to hike up and people to meet – because peace and quiet is lovely, but a holiday isn’t a holiday without new, exciting experiences, great people and beautiful views!”

4 – Kit De Waal: My Name Is Leon

What would be your perfect holiday?

“My ideal holiday would be free of decision-making.  When I’m plotting my next book, or working as a charity trustee or just being Mum, I’m constantly questioning and trying to work out the right answer.  So for me, the only big decision that I make is usually on the plane – Gin & Tonic or Chardonnay.  From then on I like my towel on a subbed, a view of the sea and a good book!”

5 – Joanna Trollope: City of Friends

What would be your perfect holiday?

“My perfect holiday includes several elements that are difficult to achieve in one place…but as we are dealing in perfection here, rather than reality, I would like the ideal holiday to be somewhere in an ancient and interesting part of Europe, with blue skies ( not necessarily hot sun though), a thoroughly comfortable but not luxurious ( and therefore impersonal) hotel, with a wonderful art gallery nearby, plenty of time to read, a selection of small and interesting restaurants and some intriguing places and markets to visit. Any suggestions?”

– Maile Meloy: Do Not Become Alarmed

What would be your perfect holiday?

“My favourite place to go on summer holiday is Woods Hole, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod.  It has the perfect combination of beach, boats, shade, good food (lobster tacos!), science museums for kids, a bike path, and good friends.  And you can always take the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard if you get restless.”

– Louise Candlish: The Swimming Pool

What would be your perfect holiday?

“My perfect holiday is the classic palm-fringed beach retreat in the Indian Ocean, but with spectacularly, unfailingly good food. I’ve always thought I must be dreaming of Mauritius, but a well-travelled friend told me recently that what I’m describing is the Seychelles. I’d take either, frankly.”
